Do You Remember Strawberry Mivvi Ice Cream Lollies from Lyons Maid

(Last Updated On: December 4, 2023)

It was always a treat to get a lolly or ice cream back in the day. The chimes of the ice cream van was pure excitement especially if you had some coins to spend or your parents were willing to treat you. A popular treat in the 1960’s, 1970’s and 1980’s was the strawberry Mivvi Ice Cream.

Do you remember this ice lolly and ice cream combination?

What Was a Mivvi Ice Cream?

Mivvi ice creams were a combination of a Cornish vanilla ice cream centre with an ice lolly outer shell. They were produced by Lyons Maid and originally were available in an orange flavour. They were an affordable and refreshing snack that were a staple of ice cream vans and also found in shops too.

A lot of shops would have the famous Lyons Maid sign outside. The sign was iconic and featured dancing children holding lollies and ice creams.

The Mivvi has been around for decades and has also been called a Cornish Mivvi due the Cornish vanilla ice cream that makes up its centre.

Mivvi Meaning

The word Mivvi actually means a type of ice cream and fruity treat. So, the word very much means the ice cream and lolly treat that the product is. A Mivvi is specifically a Mivvi.

Do they Still Make Mivvi Ice Creams?

Through various takeovers the Lyons Maid Ice Cream brand is now under the Nestle umbrella. Nestle have made Mivvi lollies in the past. However I have been looking on major supermarket websites such as Tesco, Asdsa and frozen food specialist Iceland and sadly I cannot find them anywhere.

There are very similar products available such as the Solero lollipop with an ice cream centre but nothing branded as Mivvi.

Where Can I Buy Lyons Maid Ice Cream?

Lyons Maid Ice Cream products can be found on many online frozen food retail websites and in many supermarkets too.

Although the Lyons Maid Brand was taken over by Nestle and taken off the market it has made a return. Nestle went into partnership with PAI Partners and formed the Froneri company. Lyons Maid ice cream is now available on the market and manufactured by Froneri.

My Memories of Strawberry Mivvi Ice Creams

My memories of Mivvi Ice Creams are of days spent at the seaside and enjoying a refreshing Mivvi before heading back to our car to go home. The Mivvi also goes hand in hand with memories of the ice cream van back in the 1980’s when I was a child growing up.

The Mivvi was a favourite of mine because you got the best of both worlds, fruity flavoured ice lolly and vanilla ice cream. Strawberry was always my favourite flavour with orange coming a close second.
